This is an addiction worse than alcohol or drugs. And it’s something every teenager and marketer can’t get enough of. TIME magazine has just made Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg ‘Person of The Year’ which says a lot, considering he edged out the likes of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange and Lady Gaga. Zuckerberg, the world’s youngest billionaire, now joins the likes of Hitler and Stalin who have also won that prestigious honour. TIME said they chose Zuckerberg for changing how we all live our lives in ways that are innovative and even optimistic.”
To think that it all started in his dorm room! Facebook, which today has over 500 million active users, was initially a site that allowed users to choose the ‘hotter’ student. Today it is the No 1 site for millions of internet users. Facebook recently set up an office in Hyderabad, its first in Asia.
The life and times of Mark Zuckerberg were also of much interest this year because of the release of ‘The Social Network’ that dealt with the rise of Zuckerberg and the site from its Harvard beginnings. The movie achieved critical and box office success but Zuckerberg said that the movie was inaccurate and he “just wished that nobody made a movie of me while I was still alive.”
The site has now even introduced email where users can access an @facebook.com address. It was touted by tech bloggers as an attempt to be a ‘Gmail killer’. Facebook also is now hoping to introduce face recognition tools that Google already has in place.
